DAY 40

DATE:  2/9/2013

Good morning!  My name is Brenda Trafny, and I was asked to give you a devotional thought on the book of Matthew, chapters 5 and 7.

KEY VERSE:

Matthew 7:24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

REFLECTIONS:

Chapter 5:  Wow, it was exciting to see the red print in my Bible in this reading – Jesus is speaking!  This is the famous Sermon on the Mount.  We’re in the New Testament now, and Jesus sat down on the mountainside to teach His disciples, the gathering crowds, and us!  He knew we would be reading His words one day!  He starts off with the Beatitudes, which gives encouragement to His followers – we are blessed and a great reward awaits us.   He tells us to be like salt and light to the world, to obey the commandments, to take great measures to keep away from sin, to forgive, bless and to really show LOVE to our enemies!

Chapter 7 continues the Sermon on the Mount.  He teaches us not to judge others, to keep asking, seeking and knocking in our relationship with our Father.  We learn the Golden Rule – to treat others in the same way we would like to be treated.  He teaches that the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult.  He tells us to beware of false prophets and how to know them.   Finally, He teaches us about how to be wise by building our lives on the rock of His teachings.

APPLICATION:

The Sermon on the Mount in chapters 5-7 gives wonderful detailed instructions from our beloved Savior of how He wants us all to live.  I want to honor my dear Savior by obeying them, and I believe following His teachings will bring great blessings to my life.  In regard to the teachings from this sermon, I pray this for myself and all God’s people:  “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.  Blessed are You, O Lord! Teach me Your statutes.” (Psalm 119:11-12)

Thank you for being a part of the Route 66 Challenge.  Thanks for reading, and you have a blessed day.

In Christ,

Brenda
